Here are some of the bowls we have created...

Not shown by the angle of this photo but the shape of this piece reminds me of an early NHL Goalie mask.

The Mask

Arbutus Burl turned green and allowed to morph with 3 carved feet. Finished with 2 coats of tung oil.

Nested & Morphed

3 Arbutus Burl Bowls turned green and allowed to morph each bowl has 3 carved feet. Finished with 2 coats of tung oil.

Fluted Arbutus Bowl

Arbutus Bowl, fluted, branded, stained. The outside is finished with lacquer spray while the inside is finished with food safe tung oil.
12" X 5"

Large Arbutus Bowl finished with food safe tung oil on the inside. Pyrography, stain and lacquer on the outside.
19.5" X 6"

Arbutus Bowl with gilt cream highlighted embellishments. Food safe tung oil finish.
17.5" diameter

Arbutus Bowl finished with texturing, Bronze Special Effect Paints and lacquer spray.

Arbutus Burl 3 Footed Bowl

This large salad bowl was rough turned and then boiled. After boiling the wood wanted to check so it was re turned thin and wet sanded. # carved feet and finished with 6 coats of tung oil.

Morphed

This large natural edge bowl was turned green and wet sanded with 3 carved feet. The bowl was set aside for 3 weeks to dry and morph to its final shape. Finished with 2 coats of tung oil.

A Diamond in the Rough

Arbutus Root Burl with naturally embedded rock that goes through to the bottom. Finished weight is 26 lbs

Coolabah Burl turned Oval bowl with 3 carved feet as a foot.

Arbutus Burl Bowl with pewa patches. Turned green to about 1/4" thickness and allowed to morph as it dried, linseed Oil.

A large 18" Arbutus Bowl finished with Mineral Oil and pyrography

Arbutus 3 Footed Winged Bowl finished with home made Blackberry Stain and Lacquer Spray.

22" Arbutus Bowl with carved design filled with Black Tourmaline Powder

31 Days

This piece was harvested and completed within 31 days. The tree was dying as can be seen by the contrast of light and dark wood, turned thin.

Arbutus Burl bowls

This set of Arbutus Burl "Beach" Bowls were turned from the root burl of an Arbutus tree that fell down onto the beach as the bank eroded away. The tree lay there for a few year and was starting to decay when a good friend came across it and sent a photo. We made two trips by boat to access and salvage the tree, these were all turned thin and allowed to morph as they dried taking on a very organic look and feel.
